Amazon Accused of Sacrilege For Selling ‘Offensive’ Panties Featuring Hindu Gods

Amazon has come under heavy fire for selling items, including underwear, that feature sacred Hindu deities. The company’s critics are accusing Amazon of “cultural appropriation” and sacrilege.

A statement from Rajan Zed, a prominent Hindu statesman who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, says that offensive items sold by Amazon Canada include images of Hindu gods on doormats, bed sheets, sweatpants, rugs, bedspreads, bed covers, floor mats and even skateboards.

Of particular concern is underwear carrying the image of the high-ranking Hindu deity Lord Ganesha. Before Amazon’s Canadian counterpart took down the offending e-commerce page, a pair of “inappropriate” panties (selling for 25.99 Canadian dollars) read: “Women’s Ganesh Ganesa Ganapati 4 White Hipsters.”

“Hindu deities Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva and Lord Hanuman were highly revered in Hinduism and were meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to wear on your hip or legs or put your feet on or touch with your feet or sleep/sit on. Inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the faithful,” Rajan Zed said in a statement.

Zed also urged Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos to issue a formal apology together with the removal of the items.

Earlier this month, India’s Minister of External affairs Sushma Swaraj also attacked Amazon for selling doormats featuring the Indian flag, threatening the company to “not grant Indian Visa to any Amazon official” and “rescind the Visas issued earlier.”

“Amazon must tender unconditional apology. They must withdraw all products insulting our national flag immediately,” she also tweeted.

Meanwhile, a hashtag #BoycottAmazon is now circulating widely on social media in Hindu communities, urging people not to buy from the retailer.
