One Dead, Two Hurt in Shooting in Azusa

One person was killed and two others were hurt Tuesday after a gunbattle between a shooter and police in an Azusa neighborhood prompted the lockdown of two schools and two polling stations.

The incident was reported at 2:05 p.m. at West Fourth Street and North Orange Avenue, officials said. The city is about 25 miles east of Los Angeles.

The two people who were injured were taken to hospitals but their conditions were not immediately known, said Azusa Police Chief Steve Hunt.

The details about how the situation unfolded were murky, but officers believe a female suspect armed with an assault rifle with rapid fire capability went inside a house and officers were not sure she remained inside or whether she was hit by gunfire.

No officers were hurt in the exchange of gunfire, police said.

Before sunset, aerial footage showed firefighters setting up red, yellow and green tarps as triage for further possible victims in the street.

Paramedics could be seen wheeling a gurney with a victim into a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department helicopter which sat on a field.

Elizabeth Hopkinson said she and her 9-month-old son were locked down at a polling place nearby. She said she was going to drop off her mail-in ballot when the shooting happened.

She heard, “pow, pows, then a rain of fire.”

She said she was locked down with about 25 others in the gym.

Los Angeles County Registrar Dean Logan advised voters who use these closed polling stations to go to any other polling place in the area to vote.
