Comey: New Emails Haven’t Changed FBI Opinion That Clinton Should Not Be Charged

In another surprise development Sunday, FBI Director James Comey said in a letter to Congress that the bureau has reviewed all emails to and from Hillary Clinton found on disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner’s laptop — and found nothing that changes the July decision not to charge Clinton with a crime.

Sunday’s news comes after Comey rocked the presidential campaign when he informed Congress — just 11 days before the election — that the FBI had found emails on Weiner’s laptop which were “pertninent” to its closed investigation into Clinton’s private server. Weiner has been under FBI investigations for his errant sexting; his estranged wife, Huma Abedin, is Clinton’s closest aide.

Comey wrote Sunday what the investigation found:

“Since my letter, the FBI investigative team worked around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in an unrelated criminal investigation. During that process, we reviewed all of the communications that were to or from Hillary Clinton while she was Secretary of State. We have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton.”

Brian Fallon, Clinton’s campaign press secretary, said onTwitter: “We were always confident nothing would cause the July decision to be revisited. Now Director Comey has confirmed it.”

Comey’s Sunday letter is providing a needed boost to the Clinton campaign which found itself reeling after he had appeared to reopen the email investigation.
