From Horror to Hollywood: The Most Famous Victims of the Horror Genre

Horror films are often looked down on as being inferior to other films. Thanks to a couple of decades of some silly genre movies, unfortunately the whole of horror has been tarred with the same brush. This simply isn’t the case though as there are plenty of brilliant horror films.

The biggest criticism of horror films tends to be the terrible ‘acting’ by the cast. Yet some of Hollywood’s biggest and brightest stars started out in horror. Here are some of our favourite famous faces in the horror roles that they’d rather you forgot. This list contains fifteen Academy award winners and nominees, proving that everybody has to start somewhere…

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Franchise

With the exception of the original and the first remake The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies are all rather weak. But hiding amongst the frames are three famous faces. The familiar faces began with Viggo Mortensen who pops up in the next sequel, Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III. Mortensen plays Tex, one of Leatherface’s clan.

Then in fourth film, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: New Beginning, there is a double-whammy of star power as both Matthew McConaughey and Renee Zellwegger star. McConaughey is very far removed from the rom-com hero he would become, playing one of the demented killers, Vilmer Slaughter. Renee plays the final girl, Jenny, who manages to escape McConaughey’s clutches… just.

Children of the Corn Franchise

Another franchise filled with future starlets is Children of the Corn. The film series is inspired by Stephen King‘s novella of the same name and sees grown-ups murdered by a manic cult of corn-obsessed children. The first film starred Linda Hamilton pre-Sarah Connor, but it wasn’t until the third movie that the cast started to get pre-mega starry. Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest stars none other than Charlize Theron. It’s a very small part, she doesn’t even get a proper name, just Eli’s Follower, but she can be seen lurking in several scenes.

Then came Children of the Corn IV: The Gathering in which Naomi Watts played the lead role of Grace Rhodes. Grace, a young med student, returns to her  Nebraskan hometown to discover all is not well with the children.

Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror marked an early appearance from Eva Mendes. Much like Theron, her character isn’t very prominent. She plays Kir, an ‘outsider’ who decides to throw herself into a fiery silo after being indoctrinated into the religion of ‘he who walks amongst the rows’. It really is a terrible film, but she still managed to bag herself Ryan Gosling. If he can forgive her, so can we.
