Hit-and-run driver sought after leaving pedestrian critically injured in Upland

UPLAND, Calif. (KABC) —

Authorities on Thursday continued to search for a hit-and-run driver who critically injured a 59-year-old woman in Upland while she was on her way to work.

The victim was crossing Foothill Boulevard in the 1400 block at about 9:19 p.m. Tuesday when she was struck by a vehicle heading westbound, the Upland Police Department said in a statement.

The driver did not stop to help, investigators said. The woman was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton. Her legs, arms and pelvis were broken, among other injuries.

Her daughter identified her as Sandra Burder, whose condition slightly improved after she underwent surgery.

“She doesn’t really remember anything,” Gabrielle Enriquez said of her mother. “She doesn’t remember what time of day it happened or really what was before it.”

A description of the vehicle was not immediately available, according to authorities, though surveillance video from nearby businesses was being reviewed for possible footage of the incident.

“All we really know for sure is there’s some sort of glass damage – whether it’s headlights that are broken, or the windshield has been damaged or broken,” police Lt. Cliff Matthews said.

Residents at a nearby apartment complex heard the impact and notified authorities, which is why Enriquez believes the driver must have been aware of the collision.

“There’s no way that they could’ve not known that they hit somebody,” she said. “I don’t know why they wouldn’t have pulled over or at least called the police.”

Nevertheless, Enriquez said her mother told her that she was not angry.

“She just hopes they make peace with God,” Enriquez said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Sgt. Poole of the Upland Police Department at (909) 946-7624.
