Homeless woman arrested for tagging government buildings in downtown LA

LOS ANGELES >> A 37-year-old homeless woman was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of felony vandalism for allegedly spray-painting graffiti on several county government buildings in downtown Los Angeles, causing about $9,000 in damage.

Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollenbeck Division were patrolling in the area of First Street and Soto Avenue Tuesday when they stopped the woman for having an open alcoholic beverage in public, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said.

“During the open container investigation, the officers immediately recognized the suspect,” Navarro-Suarez said.

The officers contacted the sheriff’s department and the woman was positively identified by sheriff’s County Services Bureau personnel, Navarro- Suarez said.

“The suspect, 37-year-old Victoria Jayne Bay … was arrested for felony vandalism,” Navarro-Suarez said. “She was transported and booked at Century Regional Detention Facility (in Lynwood) and is being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.”

The vandal was caught on video just before 6 p.m. Sunday tagging multiple walls on the Hall of Justice, Hall of Records and the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, according to Navarro-Suarez.

The Hall of Justice and Hall and the Criminal Justice Center are in the 200 block of West Temple Street and the Hall of Records is in the 300 block.

A heating and refrigeration plant in the 300 block of West Temple Street was also defaced, Navarro-Suarez said.

Authorities did not disclose what was scrawled.
