iPhone 8 and iPhone X Pair Fails to Beat the iPhone 6 in First-Weekend Adoption

The iPhone X expected to grow into Apple’s best-selling iPhone model to date, and analysts predict the anniversary device could become “the new iPhone 6,” with total sales to easily surpass those of its last two predecessors.

But early figures provided by analytics firm Localytics indicate that while the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 combined managed to overtake the iPhone 7, the duo is still far behind the iPhone 6, whose first-weekend adoption reached 2.3 percent share.

The iPhone X, whose adoption was measured between November 3 and November 5 (the first weekend of availability), reached 0.93 percent, more than the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus with 0.3 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. Overall, the 2017 iPhone lineup has a share of 1.63 percent, more than the 1.2 percent reached by the iPhone 7 series a year ago, but behind the 2.3 percent of the iPhone 6 in 2014.

Limited iPhone X supply

These figures, however, aren’t surprising and could actually point that the iPhone X has what it takes to overtake the iPhone 6. The existing user base of the iPhone is substantially higher than it was 3 years ago, so it makes sense for the iPhone X to have a smaller share, and given its super-limited initial supply, it still performed pretty well in the first weekend.

There are still lots of iPhone X buyers waiting to receive their pre-ordered units in both the United States and across the world, so adoption figures should improve substantially once Apple managed to resolve supply issues.

Furthermore, the analytics firm expects 2017 iPhone sales to surpass last year’s, but still fail to match the performance achieved in 2015, which was Apple’s best year thanks to the iPhone 6.

Apple does not provide first-weekend iPhone sales figures, but analysts expect iPhone X sales to continue at a strong pace in early 2018 when production issues are fully resolved.
