iPhone 8 Sells Just like an “S”

Back in the summer when we were still in the middle of the rumor season, the names of this year’s iPhones were pretty much uncertain, and while some people said there was a chance for Apple to call them iPhone 8 and iPhone X, others claimed the iPhone 7S designation made much more sense.

And now that the iPhone 8 is up for grabs with only small design and feature upgrades as compared to the previous model, the iPhone 7S moniker appears to be a much better choice than positioning the new model as a completely new generation.

This is what customers seem to think as well, with data provided by CIRP indicating that most buyers consider the iPhone 8 a small upgrade, hence its sales in line with those of an “S” model.

Specifically, the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus accounted for 16 percent of total iPhone sales in the last quarter in the United States, with the bigger model the better selling version with 10 percent.

iPhone 7 still selling like hot cakes

Historically, new generations have been substantially more successful: the iPhone 7 series account for 43 percent of the sales in the same timeframe a year ago, while the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus reached 46 percent. On the other hand, shipments of the S model (the iPhone 6s) only topped at 24 percent, closer to the performance of the iPhone 8.

“In terms of consumer demand and reception, the 8 and 8 Plus have a share of total sales that makes them look much more like an ‘S’ model, while the 7 and 7 Plus was closer to the very well-received 6 and 6 Plus. This is not surprising, as the form factor remained the same, and the improvements in features were incremental and internal,” said Josh Lowitz, CIRP Partner and Co-Founder.

Unsurprisingly, CIRP’s survey found that a substantial number of buyers are waiting for the iPhone X, which will become available on November 3. Many potential buyers delayed a purchase, the research firm says, as they’re waiting for the anniversary model.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus continue to be pretty successful, reaching 58 percent of the sales during the quarter, while older models accounted for 25 percent of all sales.
