Is Apple Botching the iPhone? 70% of Android Phones to Have Fingerprint Sensor

Apple has officially given up on the fingerprint sensor for the anniversary iPhone X, going instead all-in on facial recognition, but it turns out that this isn’t a trend that the other phone manufacturers are going to adopt anytime soon.

This is the conclusion that Counterpoint Research has come down to after conducting an in-depth research on the 2018 phone market, estimating that no less than 70 percent of smartphones launching next year would have a fingerprint sensor.

The results are not at all surprising, especially because fingerprint sensors have gotten substantially cheaper in the last couple of years, even though they were originally available on high-end models exclusively.

Furthermore, with an average cost of $1 to $2 in China, fingerprint sensors have made it to the majority of Chinese smartphones, and this is one of the reasons you can now purchase a budget Android device that costs around $100, but with such security hardware on board.

Unsurprisingly, Apple is one of the top phone makers offering devices with fingerprint sensors, having 11 percent of this particular market. Samsung leads the charts with 12 percent.

But while fingerprint sensors are making their way to a growing number of phones, flagship device manufacturers are already looking into alternative solutions like facial and iris recognition.

Apple betting big on facial recognition

Both Apple and Samsung have already installed such systems on their top devices, and there’s a good chance other manufacturers would follow in their footsteps in the coming months and years, especially given the trend to remove bezels and offer an all-screen front fascia.

Android devices do have the advantage of coming with a fingerprint sensor on the back, but as phone makers struggle to get more space under the hood, it could all be just a matter of time until alternative security tech is being widely adopted as well.

In the meantime, however, Apple seems to be the only big name that’s pushing for a world without fingerprint sensors, and rumor has it that at some point in the future, all iPhones could go for the same design and abandon Touch ID entirely. It remains to be seen how well facial recognition is going to work on the iPhone X, but for the time being, fingerprint sensors are only a safe bet on Android smartphones.
