On Sunday night at Staples Center, the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Phoenix Suns, 119-108, despite an impressive second half performance by Devin Booker that saw the second-year shooting guard finish with 39 points.

Sunday’s victory made it three wins in a row for the Lakers, which is an accomplishment considering LA only put together a three-game winning streak once during the 2015-16 NBA season. Seven games into the 2016-17 season, the Lakers are 4-3. Ignoring the 1-0 start to the 2016-17 season, LA has not had a winning record since the team started 10-9 at the start of the 2013-14 NBA season.

For the second time in as many games, the Lakers came out hot and took an early lead. After one quarter, LA led Phoenix 23-15, thanks largely to a fast start by Julius Randle. The second quarter featured more scoring from both teams. TJ Warren of the Suns, in particular, lit up the scoreboard with 13 points in the quarter.

At the intermission, the Lakers led by 11 points.

LA had succeeded in keeping Booker quiet to that point, as the Suns guard only had 10 points at the break. With his team trailing, the 20-year-old proceeded to score 29 points in the second half.

For LA, Nick Young stepped up to cancel out Booker’s scoring surge in the second half. The 31-year-old scored 22 points to lead the Lakers, 17 of which came in the second half.

With the victory, the Lakers improved to 4-3, while the Suns fell to 2-5. Next, the Lakers play the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday.
