LAX on alert following mass shooting at Fort Lauderdale airport

Police at Los Angeles International Airport say they are closely following the shooting that killed multiple people at Fort Lauderdale’s airport this morning, and have bolstered security at LAX.

“Airport Police are deploying additional resources into our terminals and an increased presence in the Central Terminal Area,” the agency wrote in a tweet. Officials were not immediately available to discuss the added security measures.

A shooter believed to have injured at least nine people was taken into custody after today’s rampage just before 1 p.m. in the baggage claim area of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, which has been shut down.

In October 2013, a shooting at LAX killed a Transportation Security Administration agent and injured three others. Paul Anthony Ciancia, 26, has since pleaded guilty to the attack and is serving a life sentence in prison.

The incident spurred a series of safety upgrades at the Westchester airport, which is in the midst of a major construction overhaul to modernize facilities.

A $2 million public communication system was installed to deliver real-time emergency updates throughout terminals. It includes message boards, electronic signs and audio announcements.

Los Angeles City’s Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEAS) can also send real-time updates to smartphones in a 5-mile radius of the airport, notifying passengers and those stuck in traffic of any issues.
