New ‘innovation lanes’ at LAX to speed up screening process

LOS ANGELES (KABC) —

Getting through security at Los Angeles International Airport is about to get faster as it is opening two new “innovation lanes” that will speed up screening.

Travelers have gotten used to waiting in long airport security lines and making slow journeys through screening areas as passengers pile baggage and other belongings onto conveyer belts for TSA screening.

Soon, some lines may be moving faster as two new automated lanes are about to open at LAX in Terminal 7, which is home to United Airlines.

The so-called “innovation lanes,” are designed to speed security screening by as much as 30 percent.

“It’s horrible – the long lines and the waiting – so if they do something like that, it’d be awesome,” said traveler Lina Gougassian.

Multiple conveyer belts allow five passengers to simultaneously unload bags, shoes and personal items. It’s designed to eliminate backups.

Other passengers will be able to slide their bins around slower travelers.

“Just as long as we also make sure that when we’re speeding things up, we’re not making any of the mistakes that come along with speeding it up,” said Matt Mare, another traveler.
