Ontario recycling plant fire under control, officials say

ONTARIO >> An Ontario recycling plant fire that caused injuries, diverted air traffic, and threatened nearby structures was completely contained Saturday morning.

As of 8:45 a.m., only small flames and smoldering debris continued to burn at the plant, located at 825 E. State St., said Ontario Fire Department Capt. John Sitar.

“We’re in the mop up stages now, there’s very little active fire and no threat of spreading to adjacent businesses or homes,” he said.

That’s a huge shift from Friday night, when 70-foot flames were seen spewing from the facility, sending a smoke screen over the northern portion of the Ontario International Airport. The airport temporarily moved all flights to a less-used southern runway, Sitar said.

One bystander was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and two male firefighters suffered minor injuries – a burn to the hand and a cut from a fall – during the blaze, fire officials said.

Sitar said several factors worked in conjunction overnight to reduce the size and spread of the conflagration, including an increase in humidity, reduction of wind and decrease in temperature.
