Our devotion to Twin Peaks in the last 25 years

TwinPeaks

The words “Who killed Laura Palmer?” have been on everybody’s lips for the past three decades and now it’s time they came back. Twin Peaks (TP) is possibly the TV series with the biggest cult following of all time. Directed by David Lynch, the show never failed to deliver in unexpected twists and turns and captivated the imagination of many during the early 1990s.

The TV show was groundbreaking for its time and many would argue that we’ve never seen the likes of such a show since. Bearing in mind that it was created in a time where the TV show culture that we all know and love today was nonexistent, Twin Peaks did well to create such a buzz around one very unusual and haunting piece of television.

The new season promises a star-studded cast, with the likes of Michael Cera (Arrested Development), David Duchovny (X-Files), and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters). Some of the old favorites are returning such as Kyle MacLachlan (Dale Cooper) and Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne) and Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer).

With an ever-growing Twin Peaks fan base, there will most certainly be many of us making use of second screens in the living room on the night of the release – one to follow the commentary on social media, and one to feast our eyes on the unveiling of a new Twin Peaks frenzy. So while we’re all waiting patiently for the release in the new year, let’s take a moment to have a look at just how much we’ve missed it and what exactly we’ve done to commemorate the epic series.

TP-Themed Parties

Most of us have been to a Halloween party or two where the Log Lady was present, or better yet an entire TP-themed party where there were one too many Killer Bob’s knocking about. TP parties have been an endless phenomenon since the 90s and will likely continue for some time to come. If organizing one in the next few months, be sure to include some cherry pie and lots of filter coffee.

TP-Themed Bars & Restaurants

There are some European-based venues such as The Black Lodge bar in Berlin, complete with red velvet curtains and black and white tiles, as well as the Copenhagen-based Log Lady Café with logs and cherry pie. Back in North America there’s The Black Lodge in Vancouver with a cabin-like feel and TP-inspired cocktails. There’s also the Gainsbourg bistro in Seattle and Twede’s Café in Washington which was the original setting for the TP café.

TP in Popular Culture

Twin Peaks references have been cropping up in many places such as the episode of The Simpsons where Homer watches the show, or in a segment in Sesame Street. It was also the inspiration behind the video game The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

While many are questioning if it’s a mistake to bring the TV series back or not, most remain confident that regardless if season three lives up to the standards of season one or not, this further injection of Twin Peaks is the moment we have all been waiting for.
