Rapper Murs will attempt to set Guinness World Record with 24-hour marathon

Los Angeles-based hip hop artist Murs is planning a rap marathon this week that he hopes will land him in the history books, or at least one very well-known book.

Murs, whose most recent album “Have a Nice Life” came out in 2015 and who just performed in Long Beach at the Village Fest on Oct. 1, will attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the longest rap marathon by performing live for 24 hours.

It’s all going down starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday and will be live-streamed in its entirety on the season ending episode “Where You At? L.A.,” a live Boost Mobile online hip hop show hosted by the rapper.

“I’m probably going to start with the most energy and end with the most energy to keep the people tuning in. The people that are up at 4 in the morning with me, they’ll be tired and I’ll be tired but I’ll still be rapping,” Murs said a few days before his record attempt.

In order to set the record, Murs will have to rap continuously for an hour, then he gets a five minute break before he must start rapping again.

With the breaks factored in, Murs will be performing for a total of 26 hours in order to set the record.

The rapper will be combining some of his own lyrics with other rapper’s music including raps from Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, DMX, Wu-Tang Clan and Tribe Called Quest.

Six hours of programming will be repeated four times during the attempt, with a total of about 400 songs in the 24-hour period.

“I’m going to pace myself, but still try to make it entertaining for people to tune in, and there is no calm way of doing Ol’ Dirty Bastard,” he said. “Towards the end when I know I got it, like the last six hours, the last time I go through the whole programming will probably be the most intense because I know I’m on the home stretch so I’m gonna sprint it.”

The idea came as a way to promote Boost Mobile’s unlimited music streaming program. Murs thought it would be a good idea if someone rapped for 24 hours straight to promote the program.

After throwing out a few names he decided to try to go for the record himself with help from some of his favorite classic hip hop music.

“I thought it would be a good way to showcase my own material as well as pay homage and tribute to other rappers. Especially in this era where a lot of young rappers are saying it’s not important for them to know other material,” he said.

Murs isn’t shattering any records, since no one has ever attempted the rap marathon.

The 24-hour threshold was set by Guinness, since rules state that any individual marathon must be a minimum of 24 hours.

The requirements of the challenge didn’t phase Murs much because he’s already taken on similar marathons.

“I was all OK with it. I’ve been streaming video games on Twitch and it’s a big thing to do 24-hour sessions when the games came out. I did it on the game “Overwatch,” one of my favorite video games that I played for 24 hours. I love rapping more than I love video games so I figured it can’t too difficult,” he said.
