Some South Pasadena Residents Face Big Jump in Rent

Some tenants of two buildings in South Pasadena are now facing an increase of 40 to 50 percent of what they had been paying. Many have banded together to fight the hike. In response to this story, the new owners of the Amberwood Terrace Apartments said to NBC4: “We are spending more than $2 million to cure deferred maintenance and are facing a significant property tax increase that amounts to $228 per unit, per month – expenses that unfortunately required us to raise rent. Because we want our tenants to stay with us, we are voluntarily keeping rent 20% below the market rate. In addition, we are effectively freezing their existing, extremely low rent for more than four months – twice as long as required by law – and providing additional assistance to seniors and disabled. We are also offering relocation assistance to those tenants who choose to move. We welcome the help of the city in reaching a resolution that everyone can be comfortable with, and hope to have things resolved by the end of the week.”
