Suspect in Custody After Riverside County Chase Ends in Shootout

A man is in custody after firing at officers following pursuit that wound up in Riverside late Tuesday evening, police said.

The chase began in Corona around 6 p.m. when a citizen flagged down police stating they had been a victim of a drive-by shooting earlier in the month and had just the suspect’s car go by, according to Lt. Christian Dinco of the Riverside Police Department.

The van refused to pull over for police and a brief pursuit ensued, winding up near the intersection of Van Buren Boulevard and Indiana Avenue in Riverside when the suspect crashed into another vehicle, Dinco said.

However, the suspect then exited his vehicle and began shooting at officers with a gun Dinco described as “AR-15-style, cut down to the shape of a handgun…a very dangerous weapon.”

Neither law enforcement nor suspect was struck with a bullet, according to Dinco.

The man then fled on foot but was later found and arrested, police said.

The individual in the car the suspect crashed into also did not suffer injuries.
