Trump quietly removes language about banning Muslims from his website [Updated]

Not even in office yet, Donald Trump is already trying to sweep campaign promises under the rug. While that’s typically worthy of outrage, in this case, we’re more than happy to let it slide.

Trump ran on many platforms: forcibly removing 11 million undocumented immigrants, building a wall to separate the US and Mexico, and banning Muslim entry to the United States until we “figure out what the hell is going on.”

A new era of tech events has begun

We’re back in New York this November for the 4th edition of our growth-focused technology event.

His full statement on the issue:

Donald J. Trump is calling for a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what the hell is going on.

We have no choice. We have no choice.

Trump’s website was updated December 7, 2015 to reveal his stance on the Muslim ban. The full statement is pictured below:

Days after the election, it appears Trump’s stance has softened — if he ever intended to take the position in the first place (more on that in a moment).

The keen eyes of UK’s ‘The Independent‘ noticed a curious omission on Trump’s website the night of the election. The December 7 statement is gone. It now links to a contribution page which then redirects you to the homepage.

While he can’t take back the speech that outlined the proposal, he definitely removed the statement from his website. There’s still a cached version available, if you’re interested.

This is important.

Many believe that Trump we saw during his campaign was merely an exaggerated version of himself, one that played to the masses and pandered to their beliefs to grab the highest office in the United States. It’s plausible that these stances could soften now that he has it.

It was Trump, after all, that once classified himself as a Democrat on social issues and a Republican on fiscal ones in a 1998 interview with NBC’s Stone Phillips and again in a talk with Larry King in 1999.

The softer stance on immigration would be a return to form if Trump was honest about his liberal leanings on social issues. Or, the language removed from the website could be for some other reason, in which case we can all go back to panicking.

Still, if true, the Trump we saw on the campaign trail would be equally deplorable to the softer one we see today. While we can all be happy that his stance has softened, pandering to voters to win an election by exploiting their deepest fears is cowardly and divisive.

But that’s an issue for a different day. Let’s just be happy that the language was removed and cross our fingers it stays gone.

Regardless of why it’s gone, let’s just be happy it is.

Update: It’s back. ?
