Search Continues Off San Pedro for Missing Helicopter

An air-and-sea search was launched Wednesday after a report of a downed helicopter near the Port of Los Angeles.

Two passengers aboard a cruise ship in the port called authorities at 5:42 p.m. to report a downed helicopter.

“There was an aircraft that departed from Torrance about 4:45 p.m. related to JJ Helicopters and that aircraft has not returned,” Tom Gazsi of the LA Port Police said at a news conference.

The aircraft is described as a Robinson R22, a small aircraft, that seats two. Investigators said they believe a pilot and passenger were on board.

The search area, less than a mile in area, includes San Pedro harbor area from Cabrillo Beach to LA Light. The search was to continue through the night, and the entrance to the harbor has been closed while it continues, the Coast Guard said.

No aircraft, victims or debris have been found, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

NBC4’s Whitney Irick contributed to this report.
