Stephen Colbert was prepared for ‘democracy’s series finale,’ on Election Night on Nov. 8 during his live Showtime special. And when Republican candidate Donald Trump started to take the official lead in the race, Stephen became visibly shaken.
On Nov. 8, Showtime aired Stephen Colbert‘s live election night special, Stephen Colbert’s Live Election Night Democracy’s Series Finale: Who’s Going to Clean Up This Sh*t?, and the performance he and his guests gave was nothing short of epic. His guests, including Laura Benanti (a Tony award-winner and Melania Trump impersonator), Jeff Goldblum, and the former The Daily Show producer Jena Friedman, all came to joke and laugh. But then things got real as reports started to roll in of which candidate was pulling into the lead. And when Stephen found out it was Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton, he became visibly shaken.
“I don’t think I could sit down right now,” Stephen said seriously to his audience after learning that Donald had a serious chance of winning the 2016 presidential election. “I think we can agree this has been an absolutely exhausting, bruising election for everyone. And it has come to an ending that I did not imagine. We now all feel the way Rudy Giuliani looks,” he said to a murmur of laughter in the crowd. “Seeing this election … people are gonna be saying ‘Has America lost its mind?’” the host said of how other countries will react to the final results. “And the answer is — evidently! ‘Back off buddy! We’ve got 300 million guns and we’re kinda stressed right now!’” he said, trying to keep things light, but honestly looking afraid.

We thought Stephen’s special was going to be absolutely hilarious, and it was funny to be sure. But when he was taking things very seriously, it was hard to laugh. “This is a moment for people to understand that political involvement is a responsibility and that it’s not just words on a paper,” Stephen said. ” You can opt out of the voting, but you can’t opt out of the effects of your lack of action. And if this is the case, now we see the effects. And the people who were not involved in the voting, or did not involve themselves in the political process are gonna be as affected as everyone else.” What Stephen said was eloquent, but very chilling coming from a comedian known for poking fun at the election all season long.
